Fortress Power: Energizing the Harshest Climates—A Successful Solar Installation in Antarctica
At Fortress Power, we pride ourselves on delivering robust, reliable energy solutions that work in the most challenging environments. Our recent collaboration on the Holt Watters Field Camp project in Antarctica showcases how our products help power critical scientific research, even in the harshest conditions.
Project Overview: A Race Against Time
In the summer of 2023, we were tasked with a time-sensitive and complex challenge: designing, building, and deploying an 8.4 kW solar energy system. This system featured:
- Two Fortress Power eFlex 5.4 kWh batteries (with plans to add two more)
- One Envy 8 kW inverter
This setup had to be durable enough to withstand the extreme cold and unpredictable conditions of Antarctica. Our team had only six weeks from receiving the RFP to get the system ready for shipment via the Drake Passage, a logistical feat in itself.
Teamwork and Customer Support: The Backbone of Success
The Fortress Power team worked tirelessly to ensure the project’s success. We partnered closely with Outpost Renewable Energy Concepts to overcome various challenges swiftly and efficiently. As solar professionals know, customer support is critical to the success of any project, and in this case, it was invaluable. The collaboration between teams was a testament to our commitment to excellence.
Jay Pozner of Outpost Renewable Energy Concepts, who led the project, shared his gratitude:
“The Fortress team worked hard with us through so many issues in a timely manner. Customer support like this is invaluable beyond measure, and I want you all to know how integral your help was to this project’s success.”
Award-Winning Design: Recognition from the Best
The Holt Watters Field Camp solar project has already earned significant recognition, winning national and international design awards. These accolades not only highlight the innovation behind the project but also reflect the importance of sustainable energy solutions in remote and critical research areas like Antarctica.
Awards include:
- Design Build Institute of America- National Merit Award
