The Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program from Hawaiian Electric is about harnessing the extra battery power in households to help Hawaii on its clean energy journey. By participating in BYOD, you’re not just a participant; you’re a partner in our collective effort towards a greener future. The BYOD program offers customers incentives for installing a new battery and dispatching during specified time periods. The battery will primarily serve the customer’s household first and any remaining excess will be the target for BYOD usage.
How to Participate
Find an installer that works with Fortress Power using our Installer Finder tool.
Certain Fortress Power systems are eligible for the BYOD program, and must be paired with the Guardian Monitor to remit information back to your power supplier.
After the installation is complete, enroll in Hawaiian Electric BYOD program using the Customer Interconnection Tool and choose your equipment incentive terms. Your installer will work with you on enrolling, or you can enroll using the Fortress Power EnergyBroker program application.
Once your system is operational and all eligibility requirements have been verified, Hawaiian Electric will issue an upfront incentive, a monthly capacity incentive and a monthly export credit. Combine that with the corresponding Federal Investment Tax Credit (ITC) to maximize your savings!
Program Benefits
Customers can qualify for up to $500 in upfront incentives. There is also a Low-Moderate Income (LMI) adder that provides an additional upfront incentive that also maxes out at $500.
Performance incentives are paid on a monthly basis as a capacity performance incentive and an export credit.
You may also qualify for a Federal Tax Investment Credit (ITC). Consult with a tax advisor on eligibility requirements.
Unlike generators that run on fossil fuels, batteries are a cleaner, quieter option for powering your home during an outage.
How the Program Works Once Your System is Installed
Potential Customer Incentives
A customer that has a 15 kilowatt–hour (kWh) battery can commit 5 kW for 2 hours for a total of 10 kWh drained from the battery. The incentives they would receive are:
Eligibilty
- Hawaiian Electric Customers with an advanced meter
- May not use the battery system for any controls other than providing backup power for the customer’s premises.
- Participate in the BYOD program for at least three years
- Have a reliable internet connection
- Own the following hardware:
